Full-width letters

Vaporwave text uses the Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms block (U+FF01 to U+FF5E). These characters exist because Chinese, Japanese and Korean text sets every character in a square cell; to mix Latin letters into that grid, East Asian encodings included “full-width” versions that take a whole cell. A (U+FF21) is FULLWIDTH LATIN CAPITAL LETTER A. Spaces become the ideographic space (U+3000) so the rhythm stays even.

Because full-width letters have been in computer character sets since the 1980s, they are among the best-supported fancy styles: every phone, computer and game console with East Asian font support can show them.

Where the aesthetic comes from

Vaporwave, a music and art movement of the early 2010s, mixed 1980s–90s corporate imagery, Japanese text and slowed-down pop. Wide text looked like the Japanese product packaging and early web graphics it referenced, and phrases such as aesthetics became part of the look. The Spaced out row (a e s t h e t i c) is a lighter variant that works in fields where full-width characters are not allowed.

Tips for wide text

Full-width text takes about twice the horizontal space, so it fills short fields quickly and wraps early on phones. Some apps sort and search full-width letters as different characters from normal ones. Pair the style with Japanese katakana (Japanese symbols), stars and sparkles from aesthetic symbols, or a soft pastel divider from text dividers. Screen readers usually read full-width letters correctly, making this one of the more accessible fancy styles.
