Mirror Text Generator

This mirror text generator writes your words backwards and swaps letters for mirrored look-alikes, so the text reads normally when held up to a mirror, like the word AMBULANCE on the front of an ambulance.

How mirrored text is built

A true mirror image reverses the order of the letters and flips each one horizontally. Unicode has no mirrored alphabet, so the generator reverses your text and then replaces letters with the nearest mirrored character it can find: ɘ (reversed e), ɒ (turned alpha, which looks like a backwards a), ɿ, ꙅ, ƚ, and capitals such as Я and И borrowed from Cyrillic.

Symmetrical letters need no change: A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y and lowercase i, l, m, o, v, w, x. Pairs such as b and d, p and q swap cleanly. The hardest letters are g, j, k and s; their mirrored forms are rare characters from Latin Extended blocks, so they appear bolder or narrower than their neighbours. That is why this style is marked “Some letters missing”.

Where people use mirror writing

Emergency vehicles use mirror text so drivers can read it in their rear-view mirror. Leonardo da Vinci famously wrote his notebooks in mirror script. Online, it is used for puzzles, secret messages, riddles in Discord servers and artistic bios. It is also useful for printing on transparent film or iron-on transfers, but for those, flip the image in your design app instead; real fonts mirror perfectly, character swaps do not.

Limits

The result is readable by humans, not by software. Search engines, translation tools and screen readers see a string of Cyrillic and phonetic letters, so keep mirror text decorative. If you want text turned over instead of reversed, use the upside down text generator. For symbols that point the other way, see arrow symbols and bracket symbols.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write text backwards?

Type in the box and copy the mirror result. It reverses the letter order and replaces letters with mirrored look-alikes.

Why don’t all letters look mirrored?

Unicode has no mirrored alphabet. Some letters, such as g and k, only have rough equivalents, so they look slightly different.

What is mirror writing used for?

Ambulances use it so drivers can read it in a mirror, and people use it for puzzles, secret notes and decorative bios.

How do I mirror text in Word?

Insert a text box, then use Format Shape → 3-D Rotation and set X rotation to 180°. That mirrors the real letters instead of swapping characters.
