♥ (U+2665, Black Heart Suit) comes from playing cards. It is the most compatible heart: it has existed since the first IBM PCs, has a named HTML entity (♥) and displays as a small text heart in any font. Check our dedicated heart suit symbol guide for shortcuts. ♡ (U+2661) is its outline version.
❤ (U+2764, Heavy Black Heart) is a dingbat. On its own it is a text heart, but followed by the variation selector U+FE0F it becomes the red emoji ❤️. That is why a heart can look black in one app and red in another. If you want red everywhere, copy ❤️ from the emoji group; for a heart that matches your text, copy ♥. What the heart emoji colors mean
