Which star should you use?

★ Black Star (U+2605) is the classic solid star and the one people usually mean by “star symbol”. ☆ White Star (U+2606) is its outline twin. Together they make star ratings: ★★★★☆ reads as four out of five in every font and on every phone. For the full profile and keyboard shortcuts, see our black star page.

The four-pointed stars ✦ and ✧ are popular as sparkles in bios, headings and dividers because they look lighter than a five-pointed star. Explore more creative styling options in our cool symbols collection. The asterisks ✱ ✲ ✳ are decorative relatives of the keyboard asterisk (*), which remains the right choice for footnotes and multiplication in code.

⭐ is the emoji star (U+2B50). It appears in colour, so it suits chats and social posts but can look out of place in a formal document. ✡ is the Star of David and ☪ (on our religious symbols page) is the star and crescent; treat both as religious signs rather than decoration.

How to type a star

There is no Windows alt code or Mac Option shortcut for ★. The quickest ways are:

  • Word: type 2605 and press Alt + X for ★, or 2606 then Alt + X for ☆.
  • Windows: press Win + . and search the emoji panel for “star” to get ⭐.
  • Mac: press Control + Command + Space, search for “star” and double-click ★.
  • HTML: ★ or ★ for ★, and ☆ or ☆ for ☆.
  • Linux: Ctrl + Shift + U, then 2605 and Enter.

Making a star rating that everyone can read

Visually, “★★★★☆” is clear, but a screen reader reads it as “black star black star black star black star white star”. On a web page, add the value as text next to it (“4 out of 5”) or wrap the stars in an element with aria-label="4 out of 5 stars". In spreadsheets, =REPT("★",4)&REPT("☆",1) builds the same rating from a number.
