Fraktur letters in Unicode
The Gothic look comes from Mathematical Fraktur (U+1D504 onward) and Mathematical Bold Fraktur (U+1D56C onward). Mathematicians use Fraktur letters for special objects, such as ๐ค for a Lie algebra or โ for the real part of a complex number. Fraktur itself is a family of blackletter typefaces used across German-speaking Europe until the 1940s.
Five capitals are not in the main range: โญ โ โ โ โจ. They were already encoded in Letterlike Symbols as โblack-letter capitalsโ, so Unicode reuses them. The generator fills them in automatically, but some fonts draw them in a slightly different weight. The bold Fraktur set has no gaps and looks more even, which is why many people prefer it for names.
Readability matters
Blackletter is dramatic but hard to read, especially capital letters: ๐, ๐ and ๐ are easily confused. Use it for one or two words, such as a name, a title or a clan tag, and keep the rest in plain text. Neither set has digits or accented letters, so โ๐๐ฒฬ๐ซ๐ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ซ 1990โ keeps plain numbers.
Where Gothic text works
It displays on all modern phones and computers. It is popular in Instagram and TikTok names, Discord display names, Twitch panels, band and metal aesthetics and game guilds. Usernames generally reject it, search does not match it, and screen readers may read it as โmathematical fraktur capital Gโ. For tattoo lettering, use a real blackletter font in a design app; the Unicode version is a preview, not artwork.
