How Unicode underlines work

The single underline uses U+0332 COMBINING LOW LINE, placed after each letter. The double underline uses U+0333 COMBINING DOUBLE LOW LINE, and the overline row uses U+0305 COMBINING OVERLINE. These marks were designed for phonetics and old typewriter-style text, and fonts attach them below the baseline so the letters stay legible.

The generator leaves spaces alone, which means each word is underlined separately. That usually looks tidier than one long line through the gaps. If you do want a continuous line, add U+0332 after the spaces too, or type the text in Word and use real underline.

What to expect on different devices

Underlines render well on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows. Letters with descenders (g, j, p, q, y) sit on top of the line, which some fonts handle gracefully and others less so. Very small text sizes can make the line merge with the letters; the double underline is easier to see at small sizes.

On the web, underlined text is the universal sign for a link. Underlining plain text in a bio or a post can make people tap it expecting to go somewhere. Use it for emphasis in short phrases, headings in a caption or to mark answers in a quiz, and keep links looking like links.
