Quick answer
Copy the Italic row for classic serif italics (๐ผ๐ก๐๐๐๐) or Sans-serif italic for a lighter, modern slant (๐๐ต๐ข๐ญ๐ช๐ค).
The four italic alphabets in Unicode
Unicode encodes italics as separate letters in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block. There are four sets: italic (๐ด๐ต๐ถ, U+1D434), bold italic (๐จ๐ฉ๐ช), sans-serif italic (๐๐๐) and sans-serif bold italic (๐ผ๐ฝ๐พ). Mathematicians use them for variables, which is why they exist at all.
The curious case of the italic h
One letter is missing from the main italic range. The slot where italic small h should be was left empty because the character already existed: โ, the PLANCK CONSTANT (U+210E) from Letterlike Symbols. The generator fills the gap automatically, so โ๐ค๐๐กโโ comes out complete. In a few fonts the โ looks slightly different from its neighbours; if that bothers you, the sans-serif italic set has no gap.
There are no italic digits, so numbers in your text stay upright. That is also true of accented letters: ๐๐๐รฉ keeps a regular รฉ.
When italic Unicode is the right tool
Italics are traditionally used for titles of books and films, foreign words and gentle emphasis. On platforms without formatting, such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube comments and Google reviews, Unicode italics are the only way to get that effect. On Discord, Reddit, Slack and WhatsApp, use the appโs own formatting instead: *single asterisks* or _underscores_ produce real italics that screen readers read normally.
Keep the text short. A phrase in ๐๐ก๐๐๐๐๐ adds tone; a whole paragraph is harder to read and may be announced letter by letter by assistive technology. Pair italic headings with a text divider, or use cursive text when you want something more decorative, and curly quotation marks for quotes.

Frequently asked questions
How do I write in italics on Instagram?
Type your text here, copy the Italic row and paste it into your caption or bio. Instagram shows it as italic because the characters themselves are slanted.
Why is the italic h different?
Unicode reuses the Planck constant โ (U+210E) as the italic small h, so it comes from a different part of the font and can look slightly different.
Can I make numbers italic?
No. Unicode has no italic digits, so numbers stay upright. Monospace, bold and double-struck styles do include digits.
Does WhatsApp support italics?
Yes, natively. Wrap the text in underscores, like _this_, and WhatsApp shows it in italics without any special characters.
