What does ♥ mean?
♥ is the heart suit from playing cards, and by far the most compatible heart character. It has been part of computer character sets since the IBM PC in 1981, which is why Alt + 3 still types it on Windows. Today it stands for love, affection and liking in any text.
Because ♥ is a text character, it takes the colour of the surrounding text. That makes it the right choice for signatures, names and designs where a red emoji would clash. For a red heart, use ❤️, which is a different character (U+2764) plus the emoji selector.
Common uses
- Signing off messages: Thanks ♥
- Card games and bridge notation: 4♥ (four hearts)
- Names and bios: I ♥ Paris
