Copy any arrow symbol with one click: simple arrows → ← ↑ ↓, double arrows ⇒ ⇔, heavy arrows ➜ ➤, curved arrows ↩ ↻ and arrow emoji. On Windows, Alt + 26 types → and Alt + 27 types ←.
These are the colorful emoji versions. They include an invisible variation selector (U+FE0F); the plain arrows above paste as text in the current font.
Arrows look interchangeable, but they carry different meanings in logic, interface design, and math symbols. Using the conventional one makes your text easier to read and keeps it searchable.

How to type arrows on a keyboard
Windows: the four basic arrows have short alt codes from the original IBM PC character set. Hold Alt and type on the numeric keypad: Alt + 24 ↑, 25 ↓, 26 →, 27 ←, 29 ↔ and 18 ↕. To type the common right arrow (→) in Word, you can also type the hex code and press Alt + X, for example 2192 then Alt + X for →. Word also turns --> into → and ==> into ⇒ automatically.
Mac: there is no Option shortcut for arrows on the US layout. Press Control + Command + Space, type “arrow” in the Character Viewer and double-click the one you want. It then appears under Recently Used.
Google Docs replaces -> with → and <- with ← as you type. On phones, copying from this page is the quickest route; you can then save a favourite as a text shortcut.
Arrows in HTML and CSS
The common arrows have named HTML entities: → →, ← ←, ↑ ↑, ↓ ↓, ↔ ↔, ⇒ ⇒ and ⇔ ⇔. For decorative pointers and directional pointers, compare triangle symbols or use the numeric form (➜) or paste the character into a UTF-8 page. In CSS, content: "\2192"; draws → after an element.
If an arrow is a link or button label on its own, give it an accessible name, because screen readers announce it as “rightwards arrow”. Pair it with text (“Next →”) or add an aria-label.
Arrow text vs arrow emoji
Several arrows exist twice: ➡ is a text character, and ➡️ is the same code point followed by the emoji variation selector U+FE0F. Text arrows take the colour and weight of your font, which suits documents and code. Emoji arrows render as coloured icons on phones and social apps. If an arrow unexpectedly turns into a blue box on iPhone, you have copied the emoji form.
