How flipped text works
There is no “upside-down” setting in Unicode. Instead, the generator reverses the order of your characters and swaps each letter for one that looks like it has been rotated 180 degrees. Many of those look-alikes come from the IPA Extensions block, where phoneticians already use turned letters for sounds: ɐ (turned a), ǝ (turned e), ɥ (turned h), ɯ (turned m), ɹ (turned r), ʇ (turned t), ʌ (turned v), ʍ (turned w) and ʎ (turned y).
Some letters are their own rotation (o, s, x, z, and capitals H, I, N, O, S, X, Z). Others are covered by lucky shapes: b and q, d and p, n and u simply swap. A few capitals need borrowed characters such as ∀ (the mathematical “for all”), Ǝ, ⊥ and Ⅎ, and they can look slightly off in some fonts.
Punctuation and numbers
Question and exclamation marks flip to ¿ and ¡, full stops rise to ˙ and brackets swap direction. Digits are the weakest part: 6 and 9 flip neatly, but 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 rely on approximations like ᄅ and ㄣ borrowed from Korean and Chinese scripts, which some devices render in a very different style.
Fun uses, serious limits
Upside-down text is a classic for jokes, “Australian” greetings and puzzle posts. Because the letters are phonetic symbols, screen readers read it as gibberish and nobody can search for it, so never flip important information. To reverse text without rotating it, use mirror text; to turn a single symbol, look for its rotated version in arrow symbols or the phonetic symbols collection, where most of these letters come from.

Frequently asked questions
How do I type upside down?
Type your text in the box and copy the upside-down result. It reverses the order and replaces each letter with a rotated look-alike.
Why are some upside-down numbers strange?
Unicode has no rotated forms of 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7, so the generator uses the closest shapes from other scripts. They vary a lot between fonts.
Can I flip text back?
Yes. Paste upside-down text into the box and the result flips it back, apart from any characters that had no rotated form.
Does upside-down text work on Instagram and TikTok?
Yes, in captions, comments and bios. It is ordinary Unicode text, so any app that shows text can show it.
