What Zalgo text actually is
Zalgo text abuses a legitimate feature of Unicode: combining diacritical marks (U+0300 to U+036F). Normally one or two of these sit on a letter, as in é or ṏ. Unicode sets no limit, so the generator stacks several random marks above and below every letter. Fonts dutifully draw them all, and the result looks like text that is melting or glitching.
The name comes from a 2004 web comic meme about Zalgo, a fictional entity whose arrival corrupts text. It spread through forums as “He comes” posts and became the standard name for this effect.
Where it works, and where it gets blocked
Zalgo pastes into most chat apps, comment sections and bios. Some platforms trim it: many limit the number of combining marks per character, some games and forums strip them entirely, and a few moderation systems treat heavy Zalgo as spam because it can cover other people’s messages. Each mark also counts as a character, so a short word can hit a length limit quickly.
Use it kindly
Screen readers either skip Zalgo or read out dozens of accent names, and it can make surrounding text hard to read for everyone. Keep it to a word or two in a horror-themed name, a Halloween post or a meme, and never use it in anything people need to read. If a message is ruined by someone else’s Zalgo, pasting it into the Unicode character lookup shows every hidden mark.
For a cleaner distressed look try strikethrough or Gothic text, and for spooky decoration browse warning symbols such as ☠ and ☢.

Frequently asked questions
What is Zalgo text?
Text with many combining accent marks stacked on each letter, so it looks glitched or cursed. It is named after an internet meme from 2004.
Why does Zalgo text change every time?
The generator picks random marks from the combining diacritics block on each keystroke, so no two results are the same.
Why was my Zalgo text removed?
Some platforms limit or strip combining marks because heavy Zalgo can overlap other content. Try fewer letters.
How do I remove Zalgo from text?
Delete the combining marks. Most text editors let you do this with a regular-expression search for the range U+0300–U+036F.
