What does ° mean?
The degree sign ° marks degrees of arc and degrees of temperature. In angles a full turn is 360°, a right angle 90°. In temperatures it sits between the number and the scale letter: 25 °C or 77 °F. In geographic coordinates it gives latitude and longitude, such as 51.5° N, 0.1° W, often with minutes (′) and seconds (″): 51° 30′ 26″ N.
Style guides differ on the space. The SI brochure and most scientific journals write 25 °C with a space, while newspapers and US usage often write 25°C or 25°. Angles never take a space: 45°. Kelvin never uses the degree sign at all: 300 K, not 300 °K.
Common uses
- Temperatures: 21 °C, 70 °F
- Angles in geometry and design: a 45° slope, rotate 90°
- Map coordinates: 40° 42′ 46″ N, 74° 0′ 22″ W
- Alcohol strength in some countries: 40° (degrees proof)
- Academic degrees of relationship in law and genealogy: 1° and 2° relatives
