Circled letters in Unicode
White bubble letters come from the Enclosed Alphanumerics block: Ⓐ to Ⓩ (U+24B6 to U+24CF) and ⓐ to ⓩ (U+24D0 to U+24E9), plus circled digits ① to ⑳ and ⓪. They date from the first version of Unicode in 1991–93 because East Asian character sets already contained them, which makes them some of the best-supported fancy letters available.
Black bubbles are newer. Negative circled capital letters 🅐 to 🅩 (U+1F150 onward) arrived in Unicode 6.0 in 2010 and only exist in capitals, so the generator uses them for both cases. Filled digits come from the Dingbats block (❶ to ❿) and ⓿.
Why bubble letters change size between apps
Because 🅐–🅩 live in the same plane as emoji, some apps draw them with the emoji font, which can make them look larger or coloured. The white bubbles ⓐ–ⓩ are ordinary text symbols and follow the size and colour of your text. For consistent results in a document, use the white set; for a bold look in a social bio, the black set stands out more.
Squared and bracketed cousins
The same Unicode blocks also hold squared letters 🄰🄱🄲, negative squared letters 🅰🅱🅲 (some of which, like 🅰 and 🅱, have emoji forms) and parenthesized letters ⒜⒝⒞. They are shown under the main result. Regional indicator letters (🇦) are deliberately not used, because two of them in a row turn into a country flag.
Bubble letters are easy to overuse. A single bubbled word in a name or heading reads well; a paragraph is tiring and may be read aloud as “circled latin small letter” by screen readers. For more circled shapes and numbers see number symbols and circle symbols, or look up any character in the Unicode character lookup.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make bubble letters to copy and paste?
Type your text here and copy the Bubble (circled) row for ⓑⓤⓑⓑⓛⓔ or the Black bubble row for 🅑🅤🅑🅑🅛🅔, then paste it anywhere.
Why are black bubble letters only capitals?
Unicode only encodes negative circled capital letters (🅐–🅩). There are no filled lowercase bubbles, so lowercase text is shown with the capital forms.
Why do my bubble letters look like emoji?
Some apps render the black bubble and squared letters with their emoji font. The white circled letters ⓐ–ⓩ always render as plain text symbols.
Do bubble letters work in Discord and games?
They work in Discord messages, display names and most game chats. Many games reject them in account usernames.
