Subscript Generator

This subscript generator lowers digits and the letters Unicode supports, so H2O becomes H₂O and CO2 becomes CO₂. The result is plain text, so it pastes into chats, spreadsheets and social posts that have no formatting.

Quick answer

Type a formula such as C6H12O6 and copy the result: C₆H₁₂O₆. Letters Unicode cannot lower are left as normal text.

Subscript characters in Unicode

The Superscripts and Subscripts block (U+2070 to U+209F) contains subscript digits ₀₁₂₃₄₅₆₇₈₉ and the signs ₊ ₋ ₌ ₍ ₎. Those are enough for most chemistry and maths: H₂SO₄, x₁ + x₂, Fe₂O₃. Subscript digits are very well supported and show correctly on every current device.

Letters are the problem. Unicode only has subscripts for a e h i j k l m n o p r s t u v x (some added as late as Unicode 6.0 in 2010), taken from phonetic and mathematical notation. There is no subscript b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y or z and no subscript capitals, so the generator leaves those letters unchanged rather than faking them.

When to use Unicode subscripts, and when not to

Use them where you cannot format text: a tweet about CO₂ emissions, a spreadsheet cell label, a chat message to a lab partner, a product title that must show H₂O. They are also fine in filenames and code comments.

For documents and websites, prefer real formatting. In Word, press Ctrl + = for subscript; in Google Docs, Ctrl + ,; in HTML, use the element. Formatted subscripts work for every letter, scale with the font and are read correctly by screen readers and search engines. The guide to typing superscript and subscript covers each app step by step.

A note for chemistry

Charges use superscripts, not subscripts: SO₄²⁻, Ca²⁺. Type the formula here for the subscript part, then add ² ⁺ ⁻ from the tiny text generator or the superscript and subscript collection. Reaction arrows such as → and ⇌ are in arrow symbols.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write H2O with a small 2?

Type H2O in the box and copy the result, H₂O. The ₂ is the Unicode character SUBSCRIPT TWO (U+2082).

Why can’t I make every letter subscript?

Unicode only defines subscript forms for 17 lowercase letters. b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y, z and all capitals have none, so they stay normal.

What is the keyboard shortcut for subscript in Word?

Press Ctrl + = to toggle subscript formatting in Word. In Google Docs it is Ctrl + , (comma).

Do subscript numbers work in Excel?

Yes. Paste H₂O into a cell and it stays that way because the ₂ is its own character, not formatting.
