Where small capital letters come from

Unlike bold or italic, small caps are not a single Unicode alphabet. They were collected from phonetic notation, where linguists use small capitals for specific sounds. ʀ (U+0280), ɢ and ɪ live in IPA Extensions; ᴀ ᴄ ᴅ ᴇ and friends come from Phonetic Extensions (U+1D00 onward, Unicode 4.0); and ꜰ and ꜱ were only added in Latin Extended-D in Unicode 5.1 (2008).

Two letters have no true small capital. Q is replaced by ǫ, a lowercase o with an ogonek, which looks similar at small sizes. X uses a plain lowercase x, since its capital and small shapes are identical anyway. The generator applies small caps to both upper- and lowercase input, so “Hello” and “HELLO” give the same ʜᴇʟʟᴏ.

Small caps in real typography

Professional fonts have genuine small capitals for acronyms (NASA, BBC) and for the first words of chapters. Word offers them under Font → Small caps, and CSS has font-variant: small-caps. Those are the right choice for documents and websites because the letters stay searchable and readable by screen readers. The Unicode version is for places where you cannot change the font, such as social profiles.

Where it works

Small caps render on every current phone and desktop, with the occasional exception of ꜰ and ꜱ on very old Android versions. They are popular in Instagram and TikTok bios, Discord display names, Twitch panels and game clan tags. Remember that each small capital is a phonetic symbol to software: a search for “hello” will not find ʜᴇʟʟᴏ.
