What does — mean?

The em dash (—) is the longest and most expressive of the standard English typographical dashes. Named because its width in traditional lead typesetting matched the width of the capital letter M in the current typeface, the em dash creates a pronounced pause that commands the reader’s attention. Writers rely on it to insert abrupt interruptions, amplify dramatic pauses, or isolate parenthetical asides that demand stronger visual separation than commas or round brackets can provide.

Unlike a hyphen or an en dash, which primarily link words or denote spans, the em dash functions syntactically like a dramatic semicolon or colon. Editorial styles differ sharply on spacing. The Chicago Manual of Style dictates setting the em dash unspaced, flush against adjacent words, whereas British publishers and AP style recommend framing an en dash with spaces or cushioning the em dash with hair spaces. For an in-depth breakdown of these distinctions, consult our em dash vs en dash vs hyphen guide and explore related marks in dash symbols.

In literary composition, the em dash also signals fragmented speech, unfinished thoughts trailing off into silence, or author attributions at the end of epigraphs. While an ellipsis suggests a slow, lingering fade, the em dash cuts off a sentence with sudden immediacy. Typographers occasionally replace it with the horizontal bar when formatting European dialogue passages.

Common uses

  • Emphatic parenthetical thoughts: “The expedition—fraught with peril from day one—finally reached the summit.”
  • Sudden conversational interruptions: “Look out for that—”
  • Attribution lines beneath quotations and testimonials: “— Maya Angelou”
  • Amplifying an explanation or unexpected conclusion: “She possessed only one ambition—complete independence.”
