What does • mean?

The bullet point (•) is the universal typographic emblem of structured, scannable communication. Appearing as a centered black circle, this clean glyph introduces individual items within unordered lists, transforming dense walls of text into digestible, visually appealing outlines. Its introduction into modern document design dramatically revolutionized executive summaries, technical resumes, slide decks, and digital interfaces by emphasizing key points without imposing numerical rank.

Typographically, the bullet point (Unicode U+2022) is carefully sized and positioned on the font’s x-height to balance against uppercase and lowercase letterforms. While smaller than a geometric full circle, it is significantly heavier than a middle dot, ensuring high visibility even at small type sizes. Modern digital writers frequently paste raw bullet symbols into social media bios, messaging apps, and email signatures to construct tidy feature lists where HTML markup is unsupported. Explore other list designs in our bullet point symbols directory and find editorial marks in punctuation symbols.

Beyond vertical bulleted lists, the bullet serves as an elegant horizontal separator on business cards, web headers, and footers (e.g. “Strategy • Design • Development”). It also functions in operating systems as the standard masking dot inside password input fields. In traditional academic publishing, authors occasionally swap the standard round bullet for an ornamental reference mark or dagger to signal specialized notes.

Common uses

  • Unordered bulleted lists in business plans, resumes, and executive proposals
  • Horizontal dividers for website headers and breadcrumbs: “Home • Products • Pricing”
  • Masking sensitive passwords and PIN entries in security dialog boxes
  • Styling highlights and credentials in social media profiles and LinkedIn summaries
