11Which currency uses which symbol?
Several currencies share a sign. The dollar sign $ is used by the US, Canadian, Australian and many other dollars, as well as by pesos in Mexico and Latin America. The ¥ sign stands for both the Japanese yen and the Chinese yuan (renminbi). The ₨ rupee sign is used for the Pakistani, Sri Lankan and Nepalese rupees, while India has its own rupee sign ₹, adopted in 2010.
When the amount matters, such as on invoices or in international pricing, pair the symbol with the ISO code or write the code alone: USD 25, CA$25, JPY 3,000. That removes the ambiguity a bare $ or ¥ creates.
How to type currency symbols
- Euro €: Alt + 0128 on Windows, Option + Shift + 2 on a Mac, and AltGr + E on most European keyboard layouts.
- Pound £: Alt + 0163 (or Alt + 156) on Windows, Option + 3 on a US Mac keyboard.
- Yen ¥: Alt + 0165 (or Alt + 157), Option + Y on a Mac.
- Cent ¢: Alt + 0162 (or Alt + 155), Option + 4 on a Mac.
- Rupee ₹: no alt code; in Word type 20B9 then Alt + X. With the English (India) keyboard on Windows, AltGr + 4 types ₹.
On phones, long-press the $ key on the numbers keyboard to see other currency signs. The iPhone typing guide and Android typing guide have the details.
Where the symbol goes
English puts the sign before the number with no space: $10, £10, €10. Most of continental Europe writes it after the number with a space, so the same price appears as 10 € in France or Germany. Follow the convention of your readers rather than the currency.
Currency symbols in HTML
The named entities are €, £, ¥ and ¢. Newer signs have no name, so use a numeric reference: ₹ for ₹ and ₿ for the bitcoin sign ₿, which was only added in Unicode 10 (2017) and can appear as a box on older devices.
