What does ₿ mean?
₿ is the currency sign for bitcoin, the first cryptocurrency. It is a capital B with two vertical strokes, echoing the dollar sign. The bitcoin community had used the design since around 2010, and Unicode made it an official character in version 10.0 in 2017.
Bitcoin has no ISO 4217 code of its own. Exchanges use BTC, and some financial systems use the unofficial XBT, which follows the ISO rule that non-national codes start with X. Amounts are usually written with the sign first and many decimals: ₿0.0025. The smallest unit, one hundred-millionth of a bitcoin, is a satoshi (sat).
Because the character is newer than most, some older fonts and devices still show a box. If that matters, write “BTC” next to the amount or use the sign only in places where you control the font.
Common uses
- Prices on crypto sites: ₿0.015
- Wallet balances and charts, next to $ values
- Logos and headings in crypto articles
