What does € mean?
€ is the sign of the euro (ISO code EUR), the currency of the eurozone. The European Commission presented the design in 1996: a rounded E, inspired by the Greek epsilon, crossed by two parallel lines that stand for stability. The euro became an accounting currency in 1999, and notes and coins followed on 1 January 2002. Unicode added the sign in version 2.1 (1998), which is why very old fonts lack it.
Where the sign goes depends on the language, not the currency. Irish and Maltese English write €10 with no space. French, German, Spanish and Italian put it after the number with a space, as in 10 € or 12,50 €. Dutch commonly writes € 10. In international documents the ISO code, EUR 10, avoids the question altogether.
On many European keyboards € is printed on the E key and typed with AltGr + E; on the UK layout it is AltGr + 4. On Windows with a US layout, hold Alt and type 0128 on the numeric keypad.
