What does ₹ mean?

₹ is the sign of the Indian rupee (ISO code INR). It was designed by D. Udaya Kumar and adopted by the Government of India on 15 July 2010, after a public design competition. The shape blends the Devanagari letter र (ra) with the Latin capital R, and the two horizontal lines echo the Indian flag and the equals sign.

Unicode encoded it the same year, in version 6.0, so it works on every phone and computer sold since then. Write it before the amount with no space: ₹500, ₹1,20,000 in the Indian digit grouping, or ₹2.5 lakh.

On Windows with the English (India) keyboard layout, press Right Alt + 4. With other layouts, type 20B9 and press Alt + X in Word, or copy it here. The older sign ₨ (“Rs”) is still used for the rupees of Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Common uses

  • Prices in India: ₹199, ₹1,499
  • Salaries and budgets: ₹12 lakh per year
  • Invoices and GST bills alongside the INR code
