What does ♍ mean?

♍ stands for Virgo, the maiden, who in classical art holds an ear of wheat. The glyph resembles a letter m with an extra loop crossing its last stroke. Its origin is debated: explanations include a stylised maiden, a sheaf of grain, or a ligature of Greek letters from the constellation’s name.

Virgo is the sign for about 23 August to 22 September. Scorpio’s glyph ♏ is very similar, with an arrow-tipped tail where Virgo has a closed loop, and the two are easy to mix up at small sizes. Check the loop before you paste one into a birth chart, a card design or a caption. Spica, the brightest star in the constellation, marks the maiden’s ear of wheat.
