What does ♒ mean?

♒ is Aquarius, the water bearer, drawn as two parallel zigzag lines that suggest ripples of water being poured out. In tropical astrology it covers about 20 January to 18 February.

Despite the name, Aquarius is an air sign in astrology, which surprises many people. The glyph looks a lot like the maths sign ≈ (approximately equal to), and at small sizes the two can be hard to tell apart. Use ≈ in equations and measurements, and ♒ only when you mean the zodiac sign; otherwise search, spreadsheets and screen readers will misread your text. The phrase “Age of Aquarius”, from the 1960s musical Hair, keeps the sign popular in music and fashion.
