What does ♊ mean?

♊ represents Gemini, the twins, and looks like two upright strokes joined at top and bottom, much like the Roman numeral II. The two pillars stand for Castor and Pollux, the twin brothers of Greek myth, whose names are also given to the constellation’s two brightest stars.

In tropical astrology Gemini runs from about 21 May to 20 June. Because the glyph is so close to “II”, don’t swap in a Roman numeral when you mean the sign: a reader, a search engine and a screen reader will all treat Ⅱ or II as the number two. ♊ also shows up in branding and project names that want to suggest a pair or a duo.
