What does ♌ mean?

♌ is Leo, the lion, the fifth sign of the zodiac, for birthdays from about 23 July to 22 August. The loop and sweeping tail are commonly read as the lion’s mane and tail, though some historians see the glyph as a simplified form of a Greek abbreviation for the constellation’s name.

The constellation Leo is one of the few that actually looks like its namesake: the curved “sickle” of stars forms the head and mane, and the bright star Regulus sits at its heart. In text, ♌ shows as a purple emoji tile on most phones and as a black glyph in documents. It is a favourite in August birthday posts and Leo-themed merchandise.
