What does ♈ mean?

♈ is the glyph for Aries, the ram, and it is usually read as a stylised pair of curled horns. In Western tropical astrology the Sun is in Aries from about 21 March to 19 April, which makes it the first sign of the astrological year.

The same glyph has a job in astronomy. The First Point of Aries, written ♈, is the point where the Sun crosses the celestial equator at the March equinox, and it is the zero point for right ascension in star catalogues. Because of the slow wobble of Earth’s axis, that point now lies in the constellation Pisces, but it keeps the old name and symbol.

On phones ♈ normally appears as an emoji tile, since Unicode gives the zodiac signs emoji presentation by default.
