What does ♇ mean?
♇ is a monogram of the letters P and L. It stands for Pluto and also nods to Percival Lowell, who founded the observatory where Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto in 1930. The same letters begin both names, which made the monogram an easy choice.
Astrologers often use a different design, a small orb above an open arc on a cross, encoded in Unicode as ⯓ (PLUTO FORM TWO) since version 11 (2018). In 2006 the International Astronomical Union reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet, and astronomers now rarely use any symbol for it. Both characters remain in use in astrology, space education and nostalgic “ninth planet” designs.
