What does ♆ mean?
♆ is Neptune’s symbol: the trident carried by the Roman sea god Neptune, known in Greek myth as Poseidon. The planet was discovered in 1846 after its position was predicted from irregularities in the orbit of Uranus, one of the great successes of mathematical astronomy.
Because the trident is such a clear, recognisable shape, ♆ is also used informally to suggest the sea, ocean or power, for example in sailing clubs and fantasy names. The emoji 🔱 (trident emblem) is a different, colourful character with the same shape. For astronomy and astrology, ♆ is the correct one; the Greek letter psi (Ψ) looks similar but is a letter used in physics and psychology.
