What does ♃ mean?

♃ is the symbol of Jupiter, the largest planet. It looks like a stylised 4 or a cursive “2” with a cross stroke, and it is commonly traced back to the initial of Zeus, Jupiter’s Greek counterpart, in the abbreviations used in ancient horoscopes. Another traditional reading sees an eagle or a thunderbolt, both attributes of the god.

In alchemy ♃ stood for tin. Today it appears mainly in astrology, where Jupiter is associated with Thursday in many languages (French jeudi, Spanish jueves), and in teaching material about the solar system. Planetary scientists sometimes write MJ for Jupiter masses instead of using the symbol, because letters are easier to typeset.
