What does ∃ mean?

∃ is the existential quantifier: ∃x P(x) means “there is at least one x for which P holds”. Giuseppe Peano used a reversed E for it in 1897, and Bertrand Russell’s work spread it. The variant ∃! means “there exists exactly one”, and ∄ means “there does not exist”. It is a mirrored capital E, not the letter Ǝ used in some African orthographies.

Common uses

  • Logic: ∃n ∈ ℕ : n² = 49
  • Uniqueness claims: ∃! x such that…
