What does ‰ mean?
‰ means parts per thousand, so 1‰ = 0.1%. It is how blood alcohol limits are written in much of Europe (0.5‰ in Germany, France and Spain), how oceanographers once gave seawater salinity (about 35‰), and how some countries quote property transfer taxes and interest. Put the sign straight after the number or with a thin space, the same way you would treat %. Its rarer sibling ‱ is per ten thousand, or one basis point.
Common uses
- Blood alcohol: 0.5‰ legal limit
- Salinity and ratios: 35‰
