What does ≥ mean?
≥ means “greater than or equal to”, the formal way to say “at least” or “no less than”: age ≥ 18, score ≥ 50%. The boundary value itself is included, which is exactly the difference from the strict sign >.
A common source of bugs is the edge case. A pass mark written as “> 50” fails someone who scores exactly 50, while “≥ 50” passes them, so it is worth choosing deliberately. In spreadsheets and code the sign is written >=; in interval notation x ≥ 3 becomes [3, ∞), with a square bracket on the included end.
In Big-O style notation, ≥ also defines lower bounds, and in statistics it appears in hypothesis statements such as H₀: μ ≥ μ₀.
Common uses
- Eligibility rules: age ≥ 18
- Targets and thresholds: “uptime ≥ 99.9%”
- Inequalities in proofs: n² ≥ n for n ≥ 1
