What does ∀ mean?
∀ is the universal quantifier: ∀x P(x) means “P holds for every x”. It is an upside-down A, for “all”, and Gerhard Gentzen introduced it in 1935. It pairs with ∃ (“there exists”), and the two swap under negation: “not everything is red” is the same as “something is not red”, ¬∀x R(x) ⇔ ∃x ¬R(x). Informally, maths teachers also write ∀ as shorthand for “for each” in notes.
Common uses
- Formal logic: ∀x ∈ ℝ, x² ≥ 0
- Definitions and specifications in computer science
