What does ☮ mean?
The peace sign ☮ was designed in 1958 by the British artist Gerald Holtom for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) and its first march to the Aldermaston weapons research site. Holtom built it from two flag-semaphore letters: the arms held down and out for N, and one arm straight up and one straight down for D, for “nuclear disarmament”, all inside a circle.
CND never registered the design, so it spread freely. By the 1960s it had crossed to the American civil-rights and anti-Vietnam-war movements, and it is now a general sign of peace, pacifism and the counterculture. Unicode added it in version 1.1 (1993) as PEACE SYMBOL; followed by the emoji selector it shows as the purple emoji ☮️.

- Signing off a message: Stay safe ☮
