What does ☯ mean?
☯ is the taijitu, the diagram of yin and yang from Chinese philosophy and Taoism. The dark half (yin) and the light half (yang) swirl into each other, and each holds a dot of the other colour. The picture says that opposites such as night and day, rest and action, or cold and heat depend on each other and are never absolute.
Outside China the symbol is used for balance and harmony in general, in martial arts, yoga, tattoos and wellness branding. The traditional orientation shows the dark half on the right with its tail at the top, but fonts differ and neither way is wrong in Unicode, which only defines the character YIN YANG (U+262F).
Common uses
- Martial arts schools, tai chi and qigong material
- Writing about balance: work ☯ life
- Taoist and philosophy texts, next to the trigrams ☰ ☷ from the Yijing
