What does ॐ mean?
ॐ is Om (also written Aum), the sacred syllable of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, written in the Devanagari script. It is chanted at the start and end of prayers and mantras and is widely used in yoga and meditation. Unicode encodes it as a Devanagari letter, DEVANAGARI OM (U+0950), because it belongs to that writing system; the separate 🕉 is the emoji version.
Because ॐ is part of a script, it displays in any font that supports Devanagari, which includes the default fonts on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.
Common uses
- Yoga studio names and class schedules
- Mantras such as ॐ नमः शिवाय (Om Namah Shivaya)
- Diwali and festival greetings
