6What the symbols represent
- ✝ Latin cross: the central symbol of Christianity, recalling the crucifixion. ☦ is the Orthodox cross with its slanted foot-bar, and ☩ the cross of Jerusalem. More designs are on our cross symbols page.
- ☪ star and crescent: widely associated with Islam and on the flags of several Muslim-majority countries. It has Ottoman origins, and many Muslims do not regard it as a religious symbol at all. ﷽ is the Basmala, the opening phrase of the Quran, written as a single calligraphic character.
- ✡ Star of David: the six-pointed star identified with Judaism and on the flag of Israel. 🕎 is the menorah used at Hanukkah.
- ॐ Om: the sacred syllable of Hinduism, also used in Buddhism and Jainism. It is a Devanagari character, so it can also appear inside Hindi text. ☸ is the Dharma wheel, whose eight spokes stand for the Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism.
- ☬ khanda: the emblem of Sikhism, made of a double-edged sword, a circle and two swords. Unicode’s formal name for U+262C is ADI SHAKTI, but it is used for the khanda, and a separate emoji 🪯 was added in 2022.
- ☯ yin and yang: the Taoist symbol of complementary opposites. ⛩ is a Shinto shrine gate and ☥ the ankh, the ancient Egyptian sign of life.
Using religious symbols respectfully
These are living symbols for billions of people. Use them where the meaning fits, for example in a greeting for a religious festival, rather than as decoration. Individual pages cover the Om symbol, the Star of David, the yin yang symbol and others, with their codes.
How to type them
None has a standard alt code or Mac shortcut. In Word, type the hex code and press Alt + X: 271D for ✝, 262A for ☪, 2721 for ✡, 0950 for ॐ. Several also exist as emoji (🕉 ☦️ ☪️ ✡️ ☸️ ☯️), which phones show in colour.
