What does → mean?
The right arrow → (Unicode name RIGHTWARDS ARROW) is the most used arrow in text. In everyday writing it means leads to, becomes or next: “London → Paris”, “draft → review → publish”. Interfaces use it to point to the next step or to a link, as in “Read more →”.
In mathematics → means a function maps from one set to another (f: ℝ → ℝ) or that a value tends to a limit (x → 0). Logicians sometimes use it for implication, although ⇒ is more common in textbooks. Chemists use it to separate reactants from products: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O.
It is also one of the easiest arrows to type. On Windows, Alt + 26 types → in most desktop apps. Word turns --> into → automatically, and Google Docs does the same with ->.
Common uses
- Processes and routes: Order → Pack → Ship
- Functions and limits: f: A → B, lim x → ∞
- Chemical equations: CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O
- Links and buttons: “Continue →”
