What does ↑ mean?

The up arrow ↑ means up, more or increase. Reports and dashboards use it next to figures that have risen (“Revenue ↑ 8%”), medical notes use it for “raised” or “high” (↑ BP), and web pages use it for “Back to top” links.

On keyboards, arrow keys are drawn with plain triangles or arrows like this one, while the Shift key has its own hollow arrow, ⇧. In physics ↑ can show spin up, as in the notation for electron spin, and in chemistry an arrow pointing up after a product means a gas is released: Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl₂ + H₂↑.

On Windows you can type ↑ with Alt + 24. On a Mac, open the Character Viewer with Control + Command + Space and search “upwards arrow”.

Common uses

  • Metrics: Traffic ↑ 12% week on week
  • Clinical shorthand: ↑ WBC (raised white cell count)
  • Chemistry: gas evolved, O₂↑
  • Footers: “↑ Back to top”
