What does ⇒ mean?

The double right arrow ⇒ is the standard symbol for implication in mathematics and logic. “P ⇒ Q” reads “P implies Q”: whenever P is true, Q must be true too. A proof might say “x is even ⇒ x² is even”. Its partners are ⇐ (is implied by) and ⇔ (if and only if).

Outside maths, people use ⇒ as a strong version of → meaning results in or therefore, especially in notes and slides: “late delivery ⇒ refund”. Some logic texts prefer → or ⊃ for implication, so follow the convention of your course or field.

⇒ has no alt code, but Word’s AutoCorrect replaces ==> with ⇒, and the HTML entity is ⇒. In LaTeX, write \Rightarrow; for the longer ⟹ use \implies.

Common uses

  • Proofs: n is divisible by 4 ⇒ n is even
  • Lecture notes: demand ↑ ⇒ price ↑
  • Checklists: “Step failed ⇒ contact support”

Frequently asked questions

What does ⇒ mean?

It means “implies”: if the statement on the left is true, the statement on the right is also true. In informal notes it can also mean “results in”.

How do I type ⇒ in Word?

Is ⇒ the same as →?

Not quite. → is mostly used for functions and limits, while ⇒ is the usual symbol for logical implication.

Is there an alt code for the double right arrow?

No. ⇒ is outside the Windows-1252 and code page 437 character sets, so no Alt + number code produces it. Copy it from this page, type 21D2 then Alt + X in Word, or find it in Character Map.

How do I type the double right arrow on a Mac?

There is no single Option shortcut for ⇒ on the US layout. Press Control + Command + Space to open the Character Viewer, search for “rightwards double arrow” and double-click it, or copy it from this page.
