What does ☀ mean?
☀ is the sun with rays, and in weather forecasts it simply means sunny or clear skies. It is also used for summer, daytime, brightness settings and a cheerful mood. Its official Unicode name is BLACK SUN WITH RAYS, where “black” means the disc is filled in.
The character has two faces. On its own it is a text symbol that takes the colour of your font, which suits forecasts in plain text, spreadsheets and minimalist designs. Followed by the emoji variation selector U+FE0F it becomes ☀️, the yellow emoji most phones show. If you paste the bare ☀ into iMessage or WhatsApp it may still be upgraded to the emoji, because some platforms prefer emoji style for this character.
For forecasts built from symbols, pair it with ☁ for clouds, ☂ or ☔ for rain and ❄ for snow; ⛅ (sun behind cloud) covers “partly cloudy”. Screen readers announce ☀ as “sun”, so in data tables add a text label such as “Sunny, 24 °C”.
Common uses
- Text forecasts: Mon ☀ 24° Tue ☁ 19°
- Summer and holiday posts: “Beach day ☀️”
- Light-mode toggles and brightness icons in interfaces
- Good-morning messages
