How to type the trademark symbol on Windows
The trademark symbol on Windows is Alt + 0153: hold Alt, type 0153 on the numeric keypad and let go to get ™. In Microsoft Word you can press Ctrl + Alt + T or simply type (tm), which AutoCorrect converts.
Quick answer
Hold Alt, type 0153 on the number pad → ™. In Word: type (tm).
Step by step
Turn on Num Lock
The code only works from the numeric keypad in number mode.
Hold the left Alt key
Keep it pressed while you type the digits.
Type 0153
The leading zero matters: it tells Windows to use the Windows-1252 table, where 153 is ™.
Release Alt
™ appears, already raised above the baseline in most fonts.
Why the code is 0153
Windows-1252, the character set behind Alt codes with a leading zero, placed ™ at position 153. Without the zero, Alt + 153 reads the older PC table instead and gives Ö. That single missing zero is behind most “the trademark code gives me a letter” complaints.
In Word, Outlook and PowerPoint
Word has a dedicated shortcut, Ctrl + Alt + T, and it replaces (tm) as you type. PowerPoint also AutoCorrects (tm). If you are writing about the letters “tm” in brackets, press Ctrl + Z right after the replacement to undo it. Type 2122 followed by Alt + X as a third option.
Without a numeric keypad
Laptop users can press Win + ., open the Symbols tab (Ω) and find ™ among the letter-like symbols. You can also copy it from the trademark symbol page and keep it pinned in clipboard history with Win + V. The guide to typing symbols on Windows explains each of these tools in more depth.
™, ® or ℠?
™ marks a brand you claim as a trademark, whether or not it is registered. ® is reserved for registered marks, and ℠ is the service-mark equivalent of ™ used mostly in the US. All three are in our legal symbols collection. Place the mark right after the name with no space (SymbolHub™) and use it on the first or most prominent mention.
