How to type the registered trademark symbol on Windows
To type the registered trademark symbol on Windows, hold Alt and enter 0174 on the numeric keypad; ® appears when you release. In Word, Ctrl + Alt + R does the same, and typing (r) is converted automatically.
Quick answer
Hold Alt, type 0174 on the keypad → ®. In Word: Ctrl + Alt + R.
Step by step
Place the cursor after the brand name
The mark goes straight after the name, with no space: Acme®.
Hold Alt with Num Lock on
Use the left Alt key and make sure the keypad is in number mode.
Type 0174
Enter all four digits on the keypad, including the zero.
Release and format
Let go of Alt. In documents you can then make ® superscript so it sits above the baseline.
Making ® superscript
Many fonts draw ® at full letter height, which looks heavy next to a brand name. In Word, select the symbol and press Ctrl + Shift + = to make it superscript; in Google Docs use Ctrl + .. On the web, wrap it in and shrink it with CSS. Superscripting is formatting only: plain-text fields such as a product title on a marketplace will keep ® at normal size.
Word and Outlook shortcuts
Word’s built-in key is Ctrl + Alt + R, and its AutoCorrect list turns (r) into ®. On layouts that have an AltGr key, Ctrl + Alt acts as AltGr, so if the shortcut types a different character, fall back to Alt + 0174. You can also type 00AE and press Alt + X.
On laptops and tablets
Without a numeric keypad, open the emoji panel (Win + .) and look under the Symbols tab, or use the Character Map. If you type ® often, copy it once from the registered trademark symbol page and pin it with Win + V. US-International keyboard users can press AltGr + R.
When you are allowed to use ®
® tells readers that a trademark is registered with a national office, and in many countries using it for an unregistered mark is an offence. For a claimed but unregistered brand, use ™ instead; the trademark symbol on Windows guide covers that one. You only need the mark on the first or most prominent use in a document, not every time the name appears.
