What does ® mean?
The registered trademark symbol ® (Unicode name REGISTERED SIGN) provides formal public legal notice that a brand name, slogan, logo, or trade dress is officially registered with a national trademark office, such as the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) or the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Unlike the informal trademark symbol ™, which claims common-law ownership over an unregistered brand, the ® symbol confers statutory presumption of ownership and exclusive nationwide rights in federal legal proceedings. It belongs to the broader family of international legal symbols and serves as an indispensable safeguard against commercial counterfeiting and consumer confusion.
Displaying the ® sign before an official registration certificate has been formally issued is unlawful in many jurisdictions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Companies with pending applications must instead rely on the unregistered trademark symbol ™ or service mark symbol ℠. Once granted, proper placement typically positions the symbol in superscript immediately following the brand mark, as seen in commercial packaging and advertising copy. Because the symbol is recognized worldwide under the Paris Convention and the Madrid System, international commerce relies upon it to establish clear brand boundaries across foreign markets alongside the copyright symbol ©.
Common uses
- Corporate branding and packaging: Coca-Cola®, Nike®, Apple®
- Product marketing copy and technical spec sheets asserting registered rights
- Website legal notices and corporate brand identity guidelines
