ⁿ writes “to the power of n” in plain text: xⁿ, 2ⁿ, aⁿ + bⁿ = cⁿ (Fermat’s Last Theorem). It is one of the few superscript letters that was already in the original IBM PC character set, which is why it still has a short Windows Alt code. It is also used in ordinal abbreviations in some languages and in phonetics for nasal release.
Common uses
- Powers with a variable exponent: xⁿ
- Growth notation in plain text: 2ⁿ possibilities
