What does ¹ mean?

¹ is a raised digit one. It marks footnotes and references in plain text (“see note¹”), appears in exponents such as 10¹ and x⁻¹, and labels ordinal-style annotations in tables. It belongs to the Latin-1 set along with ² and ³, so the three share a design; the other superscript digits (⁰ and ⁴–⁹) come from a later block and can look slightly different in some fonts.

Common uses

  • Footnote markers in emails and plain text: price¹
  • Exponents: 10¹, s⁻¹
