What does Ω mean?
Omega (Ω, lowercase ω) is the twenty-fourth and last letter of the Greek alphabet. Its name means “big o”, as opposed to omicron, “little o”. Because it comes last, “alpha and omega” means the beginning and the end, and Ω often stands for finality or the ultimate version of something.
In science the capital Ω is the unit symbol for the ohm, the unit of electrical resistance: a 220 Ω resistor. The lowercase ω means angular velocity or angular frequency in physics. Unicode has a separate Ohm sign Ω (U+2126), but it is only kept for compatibility: it normalises to the Greek capital Omega, and the Unicode Standard recommends U+03A9 for ohms too.
Omega is easy to type. On a Mac, Option + Z types Ω, and on Windows Alt + 234 does the same in most apps. In HTML it has two names, Ω and Ω.
Common uses
- Electronics: a 4.7 kΩ resistor
- Physics: angular frequency ω = 2πf
- Watches and brands: Omega, and Ω in logos
- Finality: “the Ω of the series”
