What does … mean?
The horizontal ellipsis (…), colloquially known as three dots or dot-dot-dot, is the definitive typographical punctuation mark for omissions, hesitation, and unresolved silence. In scholarly and journalistic editing, an ellipsis signals that words, phrases, or entire sentences have been excised from a direct quotation without changing the original speaker’s intent. In creative literature, screenplays, and casual digital dialogue, it communicates a pregnant pause, thoughtful hesitation, or an idea drifting off into unspoken silence.
Typographically, the dedicated Unicode ellipsis character (U+2026) is fundamentally superior to typing three consecutive full stops (...). A single precomposed ellipsis character contains fixed, balanced kerning designed specifically by the font creator, ensuring the three dots do not bunch up tightly or stretch too wide. Crucially, a single character will never break across a line boundary, preventing the jarring editorial error where two dots sit at the end of a line and the third wraps to the next margin. Review grammatical pauses in our punctuation symbols collection and contrast subtle pauses with the energetic em dash.
In software design and graphical user interfaces, the ellipsis plays an essential navigational role. Following desktop conventions on Windows and macOS, any menu command or button label followed by an ellipsis (such as “Print…”, “Save As…”, or “Options…”) signals to the user that choosing the item requires further input in a secondary dialog window before the action takes effect. Pair it with the middle dot for formatting, or compare it with expressive punctuation like the interrobang.
Common uses
- Scholarly quotation omissions: “Four score and seven years ago … our fathers brought forth”
- Trailing thoughts and dramatic hesitation in prose: “I thought we agreed, but…”
- Software interface menus signaling upcoming dialogs: “Preferences…”, “Export…”
- Streaming loading states and asynchronous progress indicators: “Loading…”
