What does χ mean?
Chi (χ, capital Χ) is the twenty-second Greek letter, pronounced “kai”, with a guttural sound like the ch in Scottish “loch”. Statistics students meet it in the chi-squared test (χ²), which checks whether observed counts match expected ones. Because Χ begins Χριστός (Christ), it is the “X” in “Xmas”, and together with rho it forms the Chi-Rho monogram ☧.
Common uses
- Statistics: χ² = 12.4, p < 0.01
- Electromagnetism: magnetic susceptibility χ
- Christian symbolism: ☧ and the “X” in Xmas
