12Choosing a bullet
The standard bullet • (U+2022) is the safest choice: it is in every font, it has a named HTML entity (•) and screen readers announce it as “bullet”. For a second level, the hollow ◦ or a small square ▪ are the conventional choices, the same ones word processors use by default.
Do not confuse the bullet with the middle dot ·. The middle dot is smaller and sits at mid-height; it separates words (Home · Shop · About) rather than starting list items. The dot operator ⋅ is different again, a maths symbol for multiplication.
How to type a bullet point
- Windows: Alt + 7 on the numeric keypad types • in most apps, and Alt + 0149 does too.
- Mac: Option + 8.
- iPhone: tap 123, then #+=, where • sits on the symbols page.
- Android (Gboard): tap ?123, then =\<; • is on that page.
- Linux: Ctrl + Shift + U, then 2022 and Enter.
Real lists vs typed bullets
In documents and web pages, let the software draw the bullets. In Word, type an asterisk and a space at the start of a line to begin an automatic bulleted list, or use the Bullets button. In HTML, use <ul> and style the marker with CSS: li::marker { content: "➤ "; }. Real lists keep indentation consistent and tell screen readers how many items there are.
Typed bullets are the right tool where formatting is not available: social media posts, bios, plain-text emails and chat messages. There, a line that starts with • or ➤ is much easier to scan than a hyphen. The Instagram bio guide shows layouts that work well, and the check mark symbols page has ticks for checklists.
